DPS Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of More Than $17,000

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized more than $17,000 in cash during a traffic stop on Thursday, July 16, in Maverick County.

At approximately 7:57 am, a DPS trooper stopped a silver Toyota SUV traveling north on US Highway 57 near mile marker 390, for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop, it was found that six passengers were being concealed within the vehicle, and later determined to be undocumented by US Border Patrol. The trooper subsequently discovered U.S. currency, totaling $17,406, on the driver.

The driver, Jose Darlin Cortez Hernandez, 26, was arrested and charged with money laundering a state jail felony and smuggling of persons a third degree felony.

The driver was booked into the Maverick County Jail.
