Babe Ruth League Officials announced that the 2020 World Series Sumner Classic Tournament that was to be held in Eagle Pass in the month of August has now been rescheduled to August 2021.
Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the Board of Directors of Babe Ruth League, Inc. has made the difficult decision to forgo the traditional Regional and World Series formats for 2020.
“These are unprecedented times,” said Steven Tellefsen, President/CEO for Babe Ruth League, Inc. “And while it is upsetting to think of all our participants who will be disappointed by this announcement, Babe Ruth League’s highest priority remains the health, well-being and safety of our participants, families, volunteers, and fans. It is our hope that our players will be allowed to return to their community playing fields and play as much baseball and softball as they can for the remainder of the 2020 year. The Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series that was to be played in Eagle Pass, Texas this summer will now take place in August 2021.”
“Eagle Pass has been a quality host location for Babe Ruth League as a previous host of other World Series and high-level Babe Ruth tournaments,” said Robert Faherty, Vice President for BRL. “The city has been working on a multi-million dollar project with the construction of a new sports complex they feel will be greatly beneficial for their community and children, now and into the future. The new City of Eagle Pass Sports Complex will include six baseball/softball diamonds, a football field, soccer fields, tennis, volleyball, and basketball areas, walking trails, and a splash water recreation area. Babe Ruth League is confident in Eagle Pass’ commitment to provide the perfect setting for our World Series participants and their families and fans. We look forward to our participants having the opportunity to play ball at the City of Eagle Pass Sports Complex in 2021 and enjoy a big-league experience.”
“Until we can safely meet on the diamond, Babe Ruth League urges its membership to focus on the guidelines set by the organization, as well as all local, state, and federal governments.
