Maverick County Sheriff’s Dept arrest two individuals for failure to report a felony

The Maverick County Sheriff Department arrested two individuals for not reporting a felony. The arrests are in connection to the murder of Sergio Jesus Lerma Jr.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department has identified the subjects as Jonathon Romero and Margarita Isabel Chavez as the two detained.

Chavez and Romero are being charged for not reporting a felony.

Under Section 38.171 of the Texas Penal Code, you can be charged with failing to report a felony if you witness the commission of a felony, and the circumstances are such that a reasonable person would have believed that an offense had been committed that would result in serious bodily harm or death, and you fail to report the crime. The statute requires that you immediately report the offense to a peace officer or law enforcement agency. As a Class A misdemeanor, the charge can carry a penalty of not more than one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber will be holding a conference on Monday to disclose as much information possible regarding the arrests in relation to the murder which occurred on December 19.

A male suspect in the murder was captured in San Antonio TX and is identified as 44 year old Mark Ivy.

The Maverick County Sheriff Department continues investigating the tragic incident.
