The City of Eagle Pass continues their month-long Christmas celebration with a live performance of the Nutcracker to be held on Sunday December 7, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The event will take place in front of the historic Eagle Pass Public Library and will be performed by children from Nicoles Dance Studio.
The origin of the Nutcracker, a classic Christmas Story, is a fairy tale ballet in two acts centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration.
The Ballets origins come from Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. It was commissioned by the director of Moscow’s Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky, in 1891, and premiered a week before Christmas 1892.
Since premiering in western countries in the 1940s, this ballet has become perhaps the most popular to be performed around Christmas time.
The Christmas story is centered on a young girl’s Christmas Eve and her awakening to the wider world and romantic love.
The Christmas ballet was first performed outside Russia in England in 1934. Its first United States performance was in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet, staged by its artistic director and Balanchine student Willam Christensen.
The City of Eagle Pass will also be holding a Christmas on main Street celebration on December 20, 2018.
