Crystal City Chief of Police involved in accident that occured at intersection of 480 and 277

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber reports that another accident occurred in the vicinity of intersection Loop 480 and U.S. Highway 277. The accident occurred on Friday, September 7 at approximately 9:17 PM, Sheriff Units were dispatched to Loop 480 by Hwy 277 East in regards to a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies made contact with the occupants of a 2014 Black Dodge Challenger identified as Evelia Pena Lopez, 38 years of age (Driver), passengers identified as Crystal City Chief of Police Jesus Maria Lopez, 43 years of age and Cristobal Lopez, 62 years of age, all from Crystal City.

The Eagle Pass Fire Department responded to the accident as well and began to treat the three Dodge Challenger occupants.

They were then transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for further treatment.

The driver of a 2016 Blue Freightliner 18-Wheeler was identified as 48-year-old Jose Maria Munoz Lopez from Arizona. He did not require medical attention.

Sheriff department Ppreliminary Investigation revealed the Dodge Challenger was traveling Northbound on Loop 480 and conducted an illegal u-turn in which it was then struck by the 18-Wheeler that was traveling the same direction.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) took over the investigation.

There has been an increase in accidents in this area possibly due to road construction occurring at this time.

The road work is expected to continue through the end of the year.
