The emergency election called by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to replace Texas state Senator Carlos Uresti has drawn 8 candidates, including his brother Tomas Uresti..
Up to now, eight candidates have registered for the July 31 special election.
Among the candidates are four Democrats, three Republicans and one Libertarian.
The candidates include state representative. Roland Gutierrez, former U.S. Representative Pete Gallego, and Attorney Charlie Urbina Jones.
The Republicans who registered are Pete Flores, Jesse Alaniz, and Carlos Antonio Raymond.
The Libertarian candidate is Tony Valdivia.
Voters will have to choose from one of this candidates. The winner of the election will finish of Uresti’s unexpired term which runs through 2020.
Carlos Uresti resigned on Thursday, June 21 after being found guilty earlier this year of 11 felonies related to fraud and money laundering. Uresti was sentenced on Tuesday, June, 26 and given twelve years in a Federal Prison.
Early voting for the emergency senatorial race begins on July 16with election day taking place on July 31.
