Four people died and another 10 were injured in a crash in proximity to Big Wells off Highway 85 at approximately 12:10 pm on Sunday, June 17, 2018.
The 4 individuals and 10 other people were inside of a late model Suburban when a Border Patrol and law enforcement officials from the Dimmit County Sheriff Department attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver of the Suburban did not heed the officers’ command to stop and a pursuit ensued of up to 100 plus miles an hour at times.
Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd has stated said there were 14 people in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
At least twelve of the individuals are suspected to be undocumented immigrants.
Five of the other nine individuals were flown to different San Antonio hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries while the four others were transported to the Dimmit County hospital.
The driver of the vehicle was also injured and transported to San Antonio and a passenger was detained.
Sheriff Boyd states that the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident and that the driver and passenger are likely to face state and federal charges.
Update: (5:00pm) A fifth casualty has been reported from the accident. The immigrant died in San Antonio.
