Eagle Pass City Main Street Program Director Joe Cruz presented an Arts and Culture Center Program Project to the Eagle Pass City Council during their special meeting held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
“We’re looking into opening an arts center in the downtown area.”
Cruz explained that in previous years while holding many art shows in the downtown area a need for such project to further develop the culture in our community grew into what is now being presented.
“We found a building in the downtown area where myself and Mayor Ramsey. E Cantu began to develop the concept and idea to use the building for the arts.” added Cruz
Cruz explained that the project will be a partnership with the Eagle Pass Arts Council who will work hand in hand with the Main Street Program and participating artist to develop cultural programs throughout the year including all kinds of art such as music, dance, painting, sculpture, photography and many other types of creative arts.
“The long-term goal is to create an Arts District as an economic driver.” said Cruz
Cruz gave a few examples across the region where such art programs have revived communities bringing in tourism and interest, assisting those towns in economic growth.
The Eagle Pass City Council approved of the proposal and voted to move forward with the Arts Culture Center.
“We want to foster local culture and develop it.” added Cruz
The building will be renovated and is expected to be ready to open before the month of April.
